What does "disease-resistant" on a plant tag really mean? And "local" when referring to plants and seeds and such? And why a $5 hole for a $50 plant?

Host Glen Andresen and co-pilot Jim Gilbert are once again in the studio for a live show. It's the bare-root planting season…and we hear a lot about choosing "disease-resistant" plants. Well, what, exactly, does that mean? And it's still dormant pruning time, so don't delay. But can some fruit trees be pruned in the summer? Yes, and we'll tell you what. Also, is it better to order "local" plants? (And, BTW, what constitutes local, anyway?) Finally, we'll talk about why you should prepare a $5 hole for a $50 plant, not the other way around as was recommended in the past.

As always, we'll have a new Plant of the Month (kumquat) and a new Garden Stumper--the first caller with the correct answer gets a free sharpening of a gardening hand tool from Cully Farm Store in Northeast Portland. Our musical theme this month is somehow related to the month of February. Plus, our Dirtbag Dictionary term is "chilling hours." And finally, what Glen is trying to understand this month.

Don't forget, if you have a gardening question, and don't want to call in, you can always email us at [email protected] -- we'll answer your question on the air during the next show. And, surprise, this is the same email to use to answer The Garden Stumper this month.

The Dirtbag, a garden variety show... Listen. Laugh. Learn.
