Filmmaker Lawrence Johnson and Writers Read 8

Listen to Stage & Studio Tuesday, June 7th at 11 am on KBOO 90.7 FM. Host/Producer Dmae Roberts talks with Portland filmmaker Lawrence Johnson about his new film Stuff. Johnson will tell us about Stuff and his experiences covering Native American and Oregon history projects through the years. He'll share some clips as well. Later in the show, Poet, author and musician Leanne Grabel in Portland will be featured in the eighth segment of the Writers Read series.

Lawrence Johnson

When Lawrence Johnson's dad died, he inherited his dad's stuff—a garage-sized storage unit's worth of stuff. As his film Stuff unfolds, Johnson explores his relationship with his father through as he sorts through the things his father left behind.

At the same time, Johnson's friend Phil is also dealing with the death of his father. The film follows Phil's journey to Iowa to bury his father's ashes. As both men evaluate their relationships with their fathers, they also turn inward to evaluate themselves.

Stuff combines live action documentary with inventive animation to tell the story of the complex and often difficult relationships between fathers and sons.
