conscious coils in the house!
we are very excited to have fellow natural hair advocate/active-ist, lover of teacher michael and model amber starks with us!
amber is the founder of conscious coils, a salon in which the mission is "to renew the collective consciousness of the people by nurturing a healthy self-image and celebrating authentic, natural beauty." amber is ONE BILLION PERCENT into promoting natural hair care:
1. through mentorship of young women of African descent
2. through her group on facebook- creating a space where people can learn and share information about natural hair
3. through the conscious coils salon located inside 'lock loft' in vancouver, washington
she is looking to change the face of the hair industry by insisting the state of oregon acknowlegdege the validity in the care and styling of natural hair, as they do for chemical-based styling.
from the skanner news (www.theskanner.com/):
"Beauticians know how hard it is to get a license to practice their trade. However in Oregon, hairstylists who only want to braid, twist and work with chemical-free natural hair are forced to get training in the full gamut of beauty salon skills -- exactly what they do not want to do professionally. Not only that, in most cases beauty schools do not train students in natural hair skills -- that training is so specialized that most who do it learned it from their families. Starks is a would-be volunteer for the Department of Human Services who would like to help girls in foster care take care of their hair -- but she is prevented by current Oregon law. So Sparks is working with state lawmakers in changing the law to allow natural hair artists to ply their craft legally."
we are looking forward to having her share stories about her hair journey, her decision to connect inner and outer well-being, the call to help others in their journies, and more!
"be free! love your hair! love yourself!"
