It took days - often weeks - for governmental agencies and relief organizations to respond to the disaster in the Gulf.
But residents - in the middle of the disaster - didn’t have a choice, and acted immediately.   While countless lives were saved by these first responders, their heroic actions were rarely reported by mainstream media.
KBOO’s Marc de Giere filed this report on one neighborhood in New Orleans that wasn’t going to wait for help to arrive.
