The postwar decades in the United States saw an unprecedented confluence of progressive elements: strong unions, activist government, robust investment in education and infrastructure, high taxes on the wealthy, and -- above all -- a moral and spiritual awakening around equality and civil rights. Today, though, after dramatic reversals on nearly all these fronts, the postwar era is in danger of being remembered as an aberration, a brief flash of enlightenment amid ongoing dominance by the monied class.
