Bill Resnick talks with Amy Schalet, the author of "Not Under My Roof", which compares attitudes and other norms surrounding teenage sexualities in the United States and the Netherlands. Amy explains how the Dutch bring up their teenagers to be ready not just for sex, but for intimacy too, and encourage them to form healthy attachments and boundaries. She connects factors of poverty, fear of teenage sexuality, hyper-genitalized notions of sex and physical intimacy, and marriage-centric expectations about sex to high teen pregnancy rates in the US and other unhealthy relationship dynamics in young adults. In the latter half of the interview, she talks about what parents in the US could learn from her observations about teen sexuality in both countries.
