Views, Reviews, and Interviews from a Socialist-Feminist, Anti-racist and Anti-colonial Perspective

Energy Forward: Bill Resnick talks to Richard Lachmann, Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Albany and author of the article, "How Climate Change Will Affect Socialist Strategy," (Socialist Forum, Winter 2019) They discuss two key struggles for climate activists. The first is to defeat the fossil fuel industry by cutting off the investments and public subsidies that sustain them. Lachmann discusses their recent victories. The second goal is to strengthen the forces of local, public,  democratically-run renewable energy systems and defeating efforts by the investor-owned utilities, like PGE and Pacific Power, to kill the expansion of public energy systems.

Black History Commodified: Sharon Grant reads from the article "A corporate, commodified Black History Month is taking hold. We can't let it." by Malaika Jabali (The Guardian, February 23, 2021). Jabali is a Brookyn-based public policy attorney and writer.

The Black Arts Movement: Nimíipuu Mole Julian Ankney, coming to you from the Nimíipuu or Nez Perce reservation in Idaho, interviews Thabiti Lewis, WSU Vancouver English Professor and Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs about the documentary film Bam! The Black Arts Movement. Dr. Lewis made the film with Dr. Pavithra Narayanan, Associate Professor of English at Washington State University Vancouver and Academic Director of the College of Arts and Sciences. The segment was produced by Desiree Hellegers. Ankney and Hellegers also teach in the Department of English, and the Moles' Laurie Mercier in the Department of History at WSU Vancouver.  All five are affiliated with WSU Vancouver's Collective for Social and Environmental Justice (CSEJ). This week CSEJ received WSU's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community, Equity, and Social Justice Award for 2021!

The Social Dilemma: Movie Mole Jan Haaken talks with psychologist Emaline Friedman about the 2020 documentary, “The Social Dilemma,” a film directed by Jeff Orlowski that tells a story of the manipulative forces behind social media and how they are rewiring the human brain. Friedman is a critical psychologist and author of Internet Addiction: A Critical Psychology of Users, a book that looks at the concept of internet addiction in the context of late capitalism.
