Please join us as we talk with Suzie Matranga-Watson of Coffee Creek Correctional Facility for this year's special International Women's Day Programming.
Suzie Matranga-Watson is a retiring Chaplain at Coffee Creek, a state prison that primarily houses women. We will talk about the unique work of serving as a chaplain in a prison and the inspiring as well as disheartening reality concerning the lives of adults in custody in Oregon's Prisons. We talk about both the opportunities women have access to for education, training, and personal development, as well as the lack of resources and opportunities that can only be met through increased state funding.
We also discuss the unique role of women as mothers and the issues around incarceration that affect their children and support for their children. We also discuss the brave work Coffee Creek's firefighting teams play here in Oregon and the role that spiritual connection plays in supporting women as they try to adjust to life as an adult in custody. Other topics covered in this interview include the status of trans women in Oregon's prisons and the problems women face post-release finding housing and community support.
