We will discuss current issues in Brazil that are relevant to women, such as the election of Worker’s Party candidate Dilma Rousseff, a grandmother and former guerrilla, who was at one point imprisoned by the military dictatorship. We will also listen to a sample of Brazilian women’s music.
Our guest is Vanessa Neves Giacometti, a Brazilian surgeon, who worked with burn victims and reconstructive surgery in poor areas and favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her parents were persecuted as student leaders during the dictatorship. She has lived in France and Switzerland, and came to the USA to study arts after life in Rio de Janeiro became too stressful. She now creates children’s illustrations and teaches Medical Terminology at PCC.
