Publis Health Issues Through the Eyes of Women - Fetal Development and Domestic Violence

Public Health Issues through the Eyes of Women

Recent scientific data suggests that low birthweight babies have a 5 times higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life. In light of these discoveries, many politicians are still pushing to cut programs promoting maternal health, such as WIC - Women, Infants and Children program. Join Bread and Roses host, Ashley Thirstrup at 6:00 PM on Sep. 30th as she looks at several public health issues affecting primarily women - maternal health/fetal development and domestic violence. She will air a special talk by award winning journalist, Annie Murphy Paul author of Origins: How the Nine Months Before Birth Shape the Rest of Our Lives. She'll tell us how she ventures into the laboratories of fetal researchers, interviews experts from around the world, and delves into the rich history of ideas about how we are shaped before birth.

Rebeccca Nickels from Portland Women's Crisis Line will also be on the show to talk about the issue of domestic violence in our community and some of the awareness activities that are planned in our community around Domestic Violence Awareness Month during October.
