Frikyiwa, founded in 1998, is the brainchild of French musician/producer Frédéric Galliano The label released a series of CDs of neo-traditional music from Francophone West Africa, several of which were recorded on location in Mali and Sénégal. Perhaps more familiar to western listeners are the Frikyiwa remix collections, produced by Galliano and other electronic artists, two of which were released in the U.S. by Six Degrees. On this week's Africa O-Yé! we'll listen to a couple of those remixes, but concentrate on original recordings by Ngou Bagayoko, Baye Coly, Filifin, Diéfadima Kanté, Kéba Kébé, Hadja Kouyaté, Ali Boulo Santo, and Tibesti, plus fascinating collaborations between some of these artists and Hindustani/Jazz percussionist Trilok Gurtu. host: Andy Hosch
