Nigeria 70 - Afrobeat, Highlife, Funk & Jazz
While Afrobeat is well-known worldwide through the music of Fela Kuti & the bands he helped inspire, less well-known were many of his contemporaries, who blazed similar paths, blending highlife and other indigenous West African styles with elements of American funk and jazz. Thanks to Strut's Nigeria 70 and Soundway's Nigeria Special series, many of these gems have reached a larger audience . This week on Africa O-Yé! we'll spin tracks from Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies, The Sahara All Stars of Jos, Peter King, Orlando Julius Ekemode, Segun Bucknor, and many more.
