Yellow and red striped flag of Catalonia

Bill Resnick interviews medical anthropologist Bayla Ostrach about Catalonian independence from Spain. Dr. Ostrach is author of Health Policy in a Time of Crisis: Abortion, Austerity, and Access, based in part on her research in Catalunya. They discuss the history of Catalan communalism and resistance to fascism, and more recently to austerity; the involvement of traditional communitarian culture in the independence referendum; Catalan welcoming of refugees and actions for health care; and the grassroots impetus of the independentist movement.

That conversation is followed by some of the Peat Bog song performed by Paul Robeson, and Bill Resnick's comments on the rise of fascism in twentieth-century Europe and lessons for confronting it.
