Larry Bowlden reviews Garth Stein's 2014 novel A Sudden Light. A fourteen year old boy, who is attempting to bring his separated parents back together, learns about his past and about his great-great grandfather’s decimation of forests for profit. As he wanders through the crumbling mansion that is about all that is left of his forebears' fortune, he discovers that a now-dead, gay great uncle tried to conserve a part of the vast forests his own father destroyed. A sad history of plunder by lumber barons and railroads in collusion, there is light and hope in this book as well.
