On this week's episode, I'm excited to play what might be the only recording of Terry Riley's Children of the Rainbow, made by Richard Francis on April 18th, 1977 at the Portland Center for the Visual Arts. A special thanks goes to archivist and audio archaeologist Sean Gaston for the recording. He writes:
"During the time he was working on what would become the Shri Camel album, he was trying his new compositions out in live performance. The first reel from this concert has an extended version of Shri Camel Trinity on it, and the second reel is Children of the Rainbow. This piece did not make the cut when distilling his compositions down into the album, and has not been performed since the concert in the late 70s. I believe that this is the only recording of it."
In keeping with the timing of this unique recording, I'll be playing other early works as well!
