Tigard Youth Peer Court is an early intervention for first time offenders. It helps divert youth from entering into the juvenile system and also helps youth to understand and accept responsibility for their actions. The court hears cases such as Theft II or III, Criminal Mischief II or III, Disorderly Conduct, and other misdemeanors; youth are sentenced by their peers; sentencing can include paying fines, performing community service, remaining or returning to school, etc. Once youth reach age 18, they may have all records of their conviction destroyed or expunged. Tigard is a city in Washington County and the Youth Peer Court is a program of the Tigard Police Department. Host Karen James speaks with Youth Services Program Specialist Lauren Gysel about the program and Lauren, along with her mom, Leslie, discuss their experience with Tigard Youth Peer Court. On May 15, 2018, Tigard will vote on a levy that will determine the future of the Tigard Youth Peer Court.
