A splendid and rousing South Seas adventure by Jack London. An iron sailing ship, the Pyrenees, has a cargo of wheat burning in her hold. She comes to Pitcairn's Island flying a distress signal, seeking a safe anchorage where the ship could be beached, so that the fire would burn itself out, leaving the iron hull. McCoy, chief magistrate and governor of Pitcairn's and grandson of one of the Bounty mutineers, comes aboard and tells the Captain  there is no beach or anchorage on Pitcairn's and that he should have "slacked away for Mangareva," 300 miles distant. McCoy agrees to go along with her to Mangareva as pilot, hoping to strike the island at mid-morning next day. But the Pyrenees and its cargo of fire strikes a gale, misses Mangareva island and combs the sea for a place to anchor.

Always at his best in the short story form, London takes actual events and imagines a magical voyage of peril and redemption.

A 3D Radio Production with Cory Cobalt Shimla, Naples Yellow, Rasco Veldt, and Fortunato. And joining us for this abridged version of this great south sea adventure is Professor Lisa Neville of Cortland University to give us some background on Jack London.
