Neighborhood Associations Rock!

On today's Radiozine, we feature two different orgs who are helping out people with how they addressing being in Portland, from living here to visiting here.

First, Jenna talks to Sunny Bleckinger and Kristin Shorey about Portland's many Neighborhood Associations, their many impacts over the decades, rumors of City Council's plans to end their funding, and how Elisabeth Jones Art Center is trying to draw attention to Neighborhood Associations.

The 90+ Neighborhood Associations in Portland are volunteer-run, transparent, and ultra democratic, so why would City Council consider cutting their funding?  Elisabeth Jones Art Center hopes to draw attention to the great work of NA's with a Call for Artists in Portland to represent their neighborhood by participating in their July 2nd exhibition. EJ Art Center has set aside 30+ stipends for artists ranging from $50 - $1000. See their website for details, and a partial list of subject material for artists (read: Neighborhood Associations' impacts).  Any interested artists are encouraged to phone, email, or stop by the EJ Art Center with any questions or thoughts. They want to hear from Portland's artists - What's important in your neighborhood?

Then Dresden talks to The Demo House is a CouchSurfing home on the verge of being demolished.  During its life, it's hosted over five hundred guests for free and was the breeding ground for unusual celebrations. Featuring Michael Bui, the longest standing member of the house, this episode will explore how the Demo House has left behind a legacy of community, open-mindedness, and a string of memorable and unexpected events.
