PNCA student Kristin Derryberry interviews Portland-based multi-disciplinary artist David Eckard about Placards and Placeholders at PCC Sylvania.
Eckard is still trying to see if object and image can possibly represent a life being lived that honestly recalls and reconciles personal and social histories with the present.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:
Please join me for this exhibition of new work!
I'm very excited to see these pieces whisper, preen, and proclaim amongst themselves in this beautiful space.
North View Gallery
The work continues my exploration of rendered images being combined with fabricated forms and structures. These sculptural rebuses offer up visual riddles built from a personal vocabulary of evocative forms, pragmatic materials and presentational invitation.
For Placards and Placeholders, I'm still trying to see if object and image can possibly represent a life being lived that honestly recalls and reconciles personal and social histories with the present.
Here are a few notes and questions pulled from studio journal:
...scores and schematics of fantasies and fetishes for an aging body (recalling).
...monk, dancing bear, trip hazard, jester, huckster.
...the power/cowardice of opaque emblems (shield/ banner), icons and coy ciphers. Yours?
...verse, chorus, punchline.
I hope you will come and discover your own answers.
