Please join us for Transpositive on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6pm on KBOO. This week we will have an intimate conversation with Lori Buckwalter. On June 15th the US Supreme Court established that Title 7 protections on the basis of sex apply to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender plus community. The landmark ruling happened during a conservative administration and on a conservative court, extends beyond just employment discrimination and will probably blunt the effects of the Trump executive order the week prior denying transgender people federal health care protections.
This struggle for the rights of lgbtq workers is more than two generations in the making. For a uniquie lens into this conversation we will spend an hour with Lori Buckwalter. Buckwalter, who transition in the 1990's in Oregon was one of the first women to come out publicly within her workplace where she came out to 3000 people and saw her rights as a worker gradually being eroded. She eventually sought the help of lawyer Joanna McNamara, a transgender woman, in her fight for employment rights. McNamara was one of the most knowledgeable professionals on the issue of employment non-discrimination specifically for transgender persons. McNamara passed away almost twenty years ago, not getting to see the fruit of her works come to pass. This show is dedicated to her memory.
