News, Views, Reviews, and Interviews from a Socialist-Feminist, Anti-racist and Anti-colonial Perspective

Norm Diamond hosts the Old Mole today, which includes the following segments:

Racism in Heath Care: While the coronavirus pandemic has made more urgent the need for universal access to quality health care, Patricia Kullberg and Jan Haaken take up the problem of racist ideas and practices within the health care setting. They take a closer look at myths about the bodies of Black people that persist in medicine, how those are often related to the unconscious biases of health care providers and the adverse impacts on the treatment of African American patients.

To the Memory of Thich Quang Duc: Desiree Hellegers reads her recently published meditative poem, “Koan,” dedicated to the memory of a Vietnamese Buddhist monk. Thich Quang Duc publicly burned himself to death in protest of religious and imperial oppression.

Another World Is Possible: Candy Luisa Herrera joins Norm Diamond, after Norm first talks about the relationship between racism and capitalism. Then the two of them discuss police unions, whose interest is served by racist policing, and the opportunities for revitalizing the labor movement.

Reform and Radical Change: Johanna Brenner and Bill Resnick address how to work in reform movements for radical ends. With the current great upsurge in reform struggle and ideas, cooptation is a danger. Many reforms are easy for our elites to live with and some even enhance corporate power. What might be genuinely radical reforms or a radical way of fighting for reforms?

Our music throughout the program is from Charles Mingus, “Original Fables of Faubus."
