Lakota Cheyenne Mole Roben White hosts this all-Native Indigenous Peoples Day show, including:
Land-based Healing: Judy BlueHorse Skelton (Nez Perce/Cherokee), Assistant Professor at Portland State University (PSU) and Emma Johnson (Cowlitz), Senior Instructor at Portland State University, both in the Indigenous Nations Studies Department discuss their collaborative work in Indigenous Traditional Ecological and Cultural Knowledge (ITECK), which provides a counterpoint to the western worldview, which places humans separate from Mother Earth. They discuss PSU’s new ITECK certificate, a place-based and community-based curriculum that centers our plant-based relatives, decolonizes academia, supports tribal food sovereignty, and offers people a chance to better connect with the landscape they call home. Intersections: Excerpts from a plenary panel from WSU’s April 2023 SJCON conference exploring the intersections of Native Sovereignty, Decolonization, Divestment, Reparations, and Environmental Justice: Constructing Coalitions at the Intersections. Facilitated by Roben White, the panel features Robert Collin, retired law professor, writer, and environmental justice activist; Rachel Cushman, Chinook; member, Chinook Indian Nation Council; Kent Ford, co-founder, Portland Chapter of the Black Panther Party; and Cathy Sampson-Kruse, Waluulapum Band, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
Art, Ecology, Poetry: A reading from CMarie Fuhrman, an author and poet whose work is rooted in the landscape of the West and includes the collection of poems, Camped Beneath the Dam, and two anthologies, Cascadia Field Guide: Art, Ecology, and Poetry and Native Voices: Indigenous Poetry, Craft, and Conversations. She has published or forthcoming poetry and nonfiction in multiple journals, including Terrain.org, Emergence Magazine, Platform Review, Northwest Review, Yellow Medicine Review, Poetry Northwest, and several anthologies. CMarie is a regular columnist for the Inlander, Translations Editor for Broadsided Press, and the Elk River Writers Workshop Director. CMarie is the Associate Director of the Graduate Program in Creative Writing at Western Colorado University where she also directs the Poetry Program and teaches Nature Writing. She is the current Idaho Writer in Residence and resides in the mountains of West Central Idaho. This segment was edited by WSU Vancouver undergraduate Drew Ott as part of a 2023 course taught by Nimiipuu Mole Julian Ankney as part of a collaboration between KBOO, and WSU Vancouver's Native Programs, and Collective for Social and Environmental Justice.
