We explore the immersive technology which is transforming the worlds of animation and comics

Digital technology is making animation and comics more immersive, and this month's guests are working at the forefront of the movement.

Jeremy Rotsztain is creating an audio-visual experience to take place in Portland's Academy Theater.  Inspired by Frederik Kiesler's historic Film Guild Cinema in New York, Rotsztain's virtual-reality cinema experience House of Shadow Silence will fulfill Kiesler's unrealized vision of projecting moving images on every surface of the space.  Dada artist Hans Richter's surrealist animations are the jumping-off point for Rotsztain's abstract shapes that will flow off the screen and onto the walls and ceiling.

We're also joined by author and comics artist David Chelsea, whose new book Perspective In Action is a colorful history of spacial representation in art, as well as a how-to manual for creating optical illusions using simple tools and reference materials.  Step-by-step instructions allow the reader to create 3-D comics, trompe l'oeil sidewalk drawings, and relief mapping, as well as sculptural projects such as anamorphic globes and cabinets of wonder.
