The Passion of Joan of Arc is one of the most celebrated silent films ever made. The original version, released in 1928, was thought to be lost after a fire destroyed the master negative. That is, until 1981, when director Carl Dreyer’s original cut was discovered in Oslo, Norway, and painstakingly restored for digital projection.
You’ll have the rare opportunity to see that version on the big screen, in Portland this Friday, January 26th, as part of the Northwest Film Center’s Reel Music Festival. The film will be accompanied by a group of local musicians and vocalists performing Voices of Light, Richard Einhorn’s oratorio written expressly for the film.
To preview the event, we welcomed David Hattner, Musical Director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, and Amy Borden, Associate Professor of Film at Portland State University’s School of Film, to the KBOO studios.
