A protest of around 200 people at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in southwest Portland yesterday did not end when the protest was over. Instead, a group of immigrant rights activists decided to set up an ongoing vigil outside of the ICE Processing facility.
They say they will remain until the federal agency ends its so-called ‘zero tolerance policy’ and the city of Portland stops coordinating with and providing facilities for ICE. KBOO visited the vigil today and spoke with some of the activists.
The protesters say they plan to keep up the vigil indefinitely, until ICE leaves Portland and stops the ‘zero tolerance policy’. The building leased by ICE is located at 4310 Southwest Macadam Avenue in Portland.
Ownership of the building is unclear, but the listed owner, the law firm of Kell, Alterman & Runstein, did not return calls for comment before airtime today. The building is listed on a page created by the Oregonian newspaper in 2013 listing properties that are delinquent in paying property taxes. 4310 SW Macadam is listed as owing eighty three thousand dollars in back taxes.
