Some people say gender is a social construction and others say it is innate and biological. The issue of gender and identity is at the core of how many people view themselves. For the past decade transgender and non-binary persons have been questioning our assumptions about gender and identity, and in the process reshaping how we think about ourselves, our bodies, our social development and our futures.
This week on Transpositive PDX guest Shamay Groman will be addressing the DSM V and the development of the diagnoses involving gender identity (de-pathology) as well as the psychology of gender dysphoria, busting the myth on “only two genders”, psychological identity vs biological identity, and understanding the development of gender identity in children.
Transpositive is a monthly program in Portland exploring themes important to those who identify as Transgender, Gender Non Binary and Gender Non-Conforming. Transpositive tries to connect listeners with the ongoing activist, arts, culture, and dialogue happening in Portland and beyond.
