this week on Prison Pipeline

Please join us Monday, July 8th on Prison Pipeline as we talk with Crystal Magana about the Inmate Firefighting Crew based out of Coffee Creek Women's Correctional Institution.

The Oregon Department of Corrections operates several Inmate Firefighting Crews based across the state.  In 2015 the first women’s Firefighting Crew went to work in Oregon helping to protect the state and building pride and confidence in the female work crews.

Inmates come from the minimum unit of Coffee Creek which is segregated into minimum and medium security.  Generally speaking minimum is either a shorter prison sentence or the inmate is reaching the end of a longer sentence.  CCWC Firefighters work with ODOC and the a Oregon Department of Forestry, after an intensive training regimen a select group is sent out with supervision to do physically demanding and deeply rewarding work, risking personal safety in order to protect Oregon’s natural resources and communities during fire season.

Prison Pipeline is a radio program dedicated to educating the public about the Oregon criminal justice system. Our goal is to present a unique understanding of the criminal justice system, address the root causes of crime, and challenge the status quo. We seek to promote awareness and activism in order to foster a safe, healthy, and just society. Tune in every Monday at 6:30 P.M. to hear our hosts Karen James, Adam Carpinelli, Amy Johnson, Emma Lugo, Doug McVay and Nicole Lindahl explore the Oregon justice system with a variety of guests.
