During Katrina, doctors at Memorial Hospital in New Orleans had to make the same kind of life & death choices US doctors may soon have to make regarding covid-19 patients. Sherri Fink, a well respected medical professional and writer, wrote about the Memorial Hospital crisis in 2013 in her book, "Five Days at Memorial." At the time, the hospital and its doctors were highly vilified for the decisions they made by people who couldn't imagine why they would make them. I interviewed Ms. Fink in 2013, and everything she talks about applies directly today. Issues covered include how conditions pushed doctors to make the decision of who lives and who dies, and why the American healthcare system (15 years after Hurricane Katrina) is nowhere near as prepared as it needs to be.
