On May 1st, 60 Venezuelans and two Americans entered the northern tip of Venezuela by boat, with a plan to kidnap the current Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro and install his rival, Juan Guaido. The coup was aided by two American ex-Green Beret soldiers, working as a mercenaries alongside Venezuelan dissidents.. The coup failed when the group were caught by local fishermen when they came ashore, as Maduro was indeed expecting them. It was a plan that a former Navy Seal called "mind-bogglingly dumb." According to the New York Post, one of the ex-Green Berets, Jordan Goudreau was perhaps not motivated by politics, but instead looking to cash in on the $15 million dollar bounty put on Maduro's head by the U.S. State Department.

To learn more, KBOO's Jenka Soderberg speaks with author, labor and human rights attorrney David Kovalik about American-invovled military action in Venezuela, as well as the real-world consequences of political sanctions in the midst of a global pandemic.

Kovalik is the author of such books as "The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela," "The Plot to Scapegoat Russia," and "The Plot to Attack Iran," among other titles.
