For much of my life I was convinced that I was completely free of racist attitudes, and would have felt insulted and laughed if anyone told me I was a beneficiary of white privilege. That all changed when I started working closely with African American colleagues to improve teaching and learning in schools across the United States. They taught me so much about what it is like to live in a society in which systemic racism is alive and well, and helped me to confront and understand my own racism and white privilege. In this episode I talk how my awareness has changed under their gentle guidance, and what I plan to do in the future to confront white privilege and racism in myself and others. I hope that by sharing my journey to awareness and action, I can help other white folks as they travel along a similar path.
