Guest contributor Jack Johnson reports on his three-hour conversation with two men who voted for Trump and finds a deep-seated sense of injured white privilege at the bottom of their thinking. Clayton Morgareidge tries to put this group of voters (white working class men) in a larger social and economic context, arguing that what they feel deprived of is the American Dream -- the hope of living a secure life through hard work and independence. Morgareidge cites Arlie Russell Hochschild's book Strangers In Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning On the American Right, which is reviewed, along with other books on the same theme, here. A somewhat problematic but insightful account of the same folks is by Joan C. Williams in the Harvard Business Review.
