Events last week in Charlottesville have triggered mass solidarity movements in cities across the U-S, including the city of Portland.  On Friday evening, at least a thousand people gathered at the Portland waterfront for the “Eclipse Hate: Solidarity with Charlottesville” rally.  The Eclipse Hate Rally, organized by Portlan'd Resistance, saw about a thousand people from many different organizations and diverse backgrounds turn out to show support.

Earlier today, the Naval vessel U-S-S John McCain was involved in a crash with a Liberian vessel off the coast of Singapore.  The collision left five sailors dead and ten others missing at sea.  In response, the Navy is putting its fleet on “operational pause,” and an investigation is now under way.  This is the fourth crash involving a U-S ship this year, and the second in the past two months.

An online auction of rhino horns was to take place earlier today in Johannesburg, South Africa, following a court ruling in Pretoria that took the side of rhino farmers.  Several South African groups were attempting to ban the event, fearing it would undermine the worldwide ban on the rhino trade and encourage poaching.  However, rhino breeders believe that open trade will be the only real means of stopping poachers.
