Trees are part of what makes Portland Portland. But how much tree cover exists, where and who takes care of it is no small matter.
That's where the Urban Forest Plan comes in. It sets goals for the urban forest, or tree canopy across the city, with intermediate steps to get there. The current draft version of the plan includes different goals for different parts of the city, because the East side of the Willamette River has much less tree coverage, in part because of disinvestment and racial redlining.
Portland is in the process of writing a new Urban Forest Plan, with an updated vision for trees and their human neighbors.
Portland Parks and Recreation is hosting an open house on Wednesday, February 26th at 5:30 p.m. at the June Key Delta Community Center, at 5940 N. Albina Avenue, for folks to learn more about the draft Urban Forest Plan and offer their feedback.
KBOO's Althea Billings spoke with Jenn Cairo, City Forester, to learn more about the draft plan and the importance of trees to the future of Portland.
